The Weirs Action Committee (WAC), a 501(c)(4) non-profit organization, was born out of an informal gathering of business owners and residents in July of 1995 aimed at fostering community spirit and unity. Over the years, the Weirs Action Committee has become the official Weirs Beach organization within the infrastructure of the City of Laconia. Anything pertaining to Weirs Beach is brought before the organization for discussion and feedback returned to the City.
The Weirs Action Committee uses its mission statement as its guidepost to foster growth and preservation of Weirs Beach:
“To preserve the unique and historic character of Weirs Beach by improving the quality and appearance of Laconia's resort community.”
The Weirs Action Committee has adopted the following strategy to accomplish its mission:
“The natural beauty and attributes of Weirs Beach and its community provide the opportunity to attract a broad spectrum of visitors to enjoy the unique attractions and amenities, thus enabling local residents and businesses to prosper and enjoy a continually improving quality of life.”
In pursuit of its mission and strategy, the following five sub-committees have been established:
PHYSICAL APPEARANCE --to encourage all property owners to preserve and enhance the physical appearance of the Weirs Beach area, and to work with the City of Laconia in addressing the needs of the public property
INFRASTRUCTURE --to advise membership on issues concerning infrastructure, including but not limited to parking, law enforcement, and traffic
SPECIAL EVENTS --to promote the Weirs Beach area, addressing both major and local special events such as the Weirs Beach Fireworks
MARKETING --to promote Weirs Beach via the Internet and printed material
MEMBERSHIP & FUNDRAISING --to encourage any person, group or business having an interest in the objectives of the Weirs Action Committee to become a member; and to raise funds through sponsorships, donations, and organized activities such as the Laconia Motorcycle Week parking lot
Additionally, member-volunteers have been designated to liason with the following City of Laconia departments - City Council, Police Commission, and Planning Department.
Over the years, the Weirs Action Committee has lived up to its "Action" name, as many of the original goals of the Weirs Action Committee have indeed been accomplished. There are many examples - the replacement of the Endicott Rock statue, the refurbishing of the Weirs Beach sign, and most recently, the burial of the utility wires on Lakeside Avenue. However, the Weirs Action Committee still has many more goals that it continues to focus on: restoration of the sand at the Beach; expansion of the public docks; extension of the WOW recreation trail to the Weirs; and renovation of the old section of the boardwalk. Please join the Weirs Action Committee and help us move forward for the good of our community.
The Weirs Action Committee's 2024 projects include the ongoing beautification of the area with flower plantings, the continuing maintenance of the Weirs Beach sign, and a Vintage Motorcycle & Rider statue.
By becoming a member, you will stay informed of what is going on in our small community. Even if you are unable to attend our monthly meetings, you will receive minutes of the meetings.
